The Millbrook Press and NetLibrary to Distribute eBooks to Schools

Brookfield, Conn. – June 1, 2000 – The Millbrook Press, a widely recognized publisher of nonfiction and children's literature, today announced an online eBook distribution agreement with NetLibrary Inc., a leading provider of eBooks and content/collection management services. The agreement calls for a starting collection of more than 350 best sellers from The Millbrook Press to be made available through NetLibrary to K-12 and public libraries in time for use in fall 2000.

The Millbrook Press is a curriculum-oriented children's book publisher with a concentration on quality nonfiction for the school and library markets. Millbrook has more than 1,500 books in print and adds approximately 175 new titles per year. Millbrook's titles are to be distributed through NetLibrary's arrangement with Follett Library Resources, a leading provider of recorded knowledge to K-12 school libraries. Millbrook titles also will be available to NetLibrary's public library customers.

"The Millbrook Press recognizes that eBooks are part of the future for every publisher and every library," said Millbrook Chairman Howard Graham. "NetLibrary's model for developing, managing, and distributing eBooks is the best solution for The Millbrook Press."

The Millbrook Press publishes many of its books in series, each covering a specific topic and ranging in size from five to 50 books. A few of the series under consideration for the NetLibrary collection are: Biographies on Target, Issue and Debate Series, Contemporary Issues, Supreme Court Decisions, and Science and Technology.

"The Millbrook Press will add substantially to the content we offer kindergarten through twelfth-grade students," said NetLibrary Chief Operating Officer Nancy Talmey. "Printed versions of Millbrook's award-winning books already are highly sought after by young readers; we expect that eBook versions will become increasingly popular as time passes."

NetLibrary creates electronic versions of publishers' print editions and manages eBooks through an infrastructure that facilitates high-level digital rights management. Through NetLibrary, eBooks can be distributed to a variety of institutional and retail channels and to a number of different platforms. NetLibrary gives libraries the ability to lend eBook titles for a set time period while safeguarding intellectual property rights through the restriction of print and copy functions. Patrons benefit from round-the-clock collection access and the ability to search eBook collections by keyword, phrase, subject, author, title, or idea.
