American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, to be
Embedded in NetLibrary™ eBooks
Online dictionary features definitions, notes, images, and sound files
BOOK EXPO AMERICA, CHICAGO - June 2, 2000 - By providing an extensive collection
of eBooks that is fully searchable and available 24 hours a day over the
Internet, NetLibrary offers a powerful tool to students, researchers, and
professionals. Starting Sept. 14, 2000, NetLibrary will make it easier for
people to gain knowledge and meaning from its eBooks by offering access to The
American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition,
published by Houghton Mifflin Company.
The American Heritage® Dictionary will be embedded in all NetLibrary
eBooks, including textbooks and titles designated for sale to NetLibrary's
academic, corporate, K-12, and special library customers. NetLibrary also
will offer access to The American Heritage® Student Dictionary and The American
Heritage® Children's Dictionary.
"By embedding this preeminent reference on American usage of the English
language in our eBooks, we are adding a multi-dimensional component to
our publisher's titles," said NetLibrary Chief Operating Officer Nancy
Talmey. "By offering versions of the American Heritage® Dictionary designed
for children, students, and adults, we are able to offer level-appropriate
reference resources to readers in all of our markets."
To find terms from the electronic dictionary, users simply highlight a word
in the eBook. A definition from the American Heritage® Dictionary will
appear instantly by way of Houghton Mifflin Company's look-up technology.
This word-search technology enables users to quickly search for word definitions
word histories, and guidance on usage. Electronic dictionary entries can be
searched, browsed, and used as a spell-checking tool.
All of the new features available in the print edition of the American
Heritage® Dictionary, Fourth Edition — usage notes, regional notes,
geographical and biographical entries, and appendixes of Indo-European and
Semitic roots — will be available in the version embedded in NetLibrary's
eBooks. The embedded dictionary also will include10,000 new words reflecting the
changes in technology and American culture that have taken place since the
dictionary's third edition was released in 1992.
Houghton Mifflin Company's editors have selected more than 4,000 photos, drawings,
maps, and other graphic elements to illustrate the print version of the dictionary.
NetLibrary will provide 900 of these images in digital form, and users can enlarge
the images on their computer screens according to their needs. The embedded dictionary
also will feature 70,000 audio pronunciation files.
"The editors of The American Heritage® Dictionary have always sought to fully
capture the essence of the English language as it is used in our times," said Houghton
Mifflin Company Executive Vice President and Publisher of the Trade & Reference
Division Wendy J. Strothman. "An essential aspect of contemporary language is that of
connectivity, particularly through the Internet. That is why we are proud to be working
with a firm such as NetLibrary to offer online access to this wealth of lexical knowledge."
