RAND to Offer Research Publications Electronically through NetLibrary
PHILADELPHIA (SLA 2000 ANNUAL CONFERENCE) – June 12, 2000 – RAND announced
today that its publications covering a broad range of topics will be made
available to libraries and other institutions through NetLibrary Inc., a
leading provider of eBooks and content and collection management services.
RAND is a private, non-profit institution dedicated to improving public
policy through research and analysis. RAND's broader mission includes
disseminating the results of its research on issues such as education,
health care, criminal and civil justice, labor and population, science
and technology, community development, international relations, national
security and regional studies.
RAND titles to be offered through NetLibrary include research publications
such as "Closing the Education Gap: Benefits and Costs," "Citizens,
Computers, and Connectivity," "The U.S. and a Rising China: Strategic
and Military Implications," "Countering the New Terrorism," and "Global
Science and Technology Information: A New Spin on Access." RAND intends
to offer all of its monographs published since 1999, as well as the best
of its backlist, through NetLibrary.
"Digital distribution of content is a critical component of RAND's outreach
efforts," said John Warren, Marketing Director at RAND. "The eBook creation,
hosting, and distribution solution offered by NetLibrary, and the
institutional markets they have penetrated, make them uniquely suited
to assisting RAND in our goal of broadening our reach through digital
distribution."
NetLibrary creates electronic versions of publishers' print editions and
manages eBooks through an infrastructure that facilitates high-level digital
rights management. Through NetLibrary, eBooks can be distributed to a
variety of channels and to a number of different platforms. NetLibrary
gives libraries the ability to lend eBook titles for a set time period
while safeguarding intellectual property rights. Patrons benefit from
round-the-clock collection access and the ability to search eBook collections
by keyword, phrase, subject, author, title, or idea.
"RAND publishes reports that are of great value to our customers in the
academic, corporate, and special library markets," said NetLibrary Chief
Operating Officer Nancy Talmey. "We look forward to working with RAND in
an arrangement that benefits both them and our institutional customers."
From its inception in the days following World War II, RAND has focused on
the nation's most pressing policy problems. High-quality, objective research
on national security became the institution's first hallmark. In the 1960s,
and in the same spirit, RAND began addressing major problems of domestic
policy as well. Today, RAND researchers operate on a uniquely broad front,
assisting public policymakers at all levels, private sector leaders in many
industries, and the public at large in efforts to strengthen the nation's
economy, maintain its security, and improve its quality of life. They do so
by analyzing choices and developments in many areas, including national
defense, education and training, health care, criminal and civil justice,
labor and population, science and technology, community development,
international relations, and regional studies.
NetLibrary (www.NetLibrary.com) is a leading provider of
eBooks and Internet-based content/collection management services.
NetLibrary has established relationships with more than 300 publishers
of trade, academic, reference, and scholarly books, and has created
digital versions of more than 22,000 titles. NetLibrary hosts and manages
