SIMON & SCHUSTER CHIEF EXECUTIVE JONATHAN NEWCOMB JOINS NETLIBRARY BOARD OF DIRECTORS
BOULDER, COLO. — Dec. 9, 1999 — NetLibrary™ (www.NetLibrary.com), the world's premier
provider of eBooks and information over the Internet, today announced the appointment
of Simon & Schuster Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Newcomb to the NetLibrary Board of Directors.
Newcomb joins the NetLibrary board at a time of rapid growth.
In the 16 months since it was founded, NetLibrary has built a collection of more than 9,300 eBook
titles from 100 different publishers. Close to 1,000 libraries have access to NetLibrary eBook collections.
The Company recently closed its third investment round, a combination of strategic and venture funding
totaling $70 million.
"Jon Newcomb brings a wealth of publishing industry experience
to NetLibrary," said Timothy R. Schiewe, NetLibrary president and chief executive officer. "With Jon's
help, we will continue our efforts to bring eBooks to libraries and consumers and provide the best
eBook solution to publishers."
Newcomb, 52, has served as CEO of Simon & Schuster since June 1994.
Prior to his appointment as chief executive, Newcomb served as Simon & Schuster's president and chief
operating officer, and executive vice president of operations, a role he assumed in 1988.
Prior to joining Simon & Schuster, Newcomb was president of the
Financial and Economic Information Group at McGraw-Hill, which included the business units of
Standard & Poor's and Data Resources Inc. He began his career at McGraw-Hill in 1974 as a marketing
manager for Standard & Poor's and, after a series of marketing and product development positions,
was named group vice president in 1982 and executive vice president in 1984.
Newcomb was born in Chappaqua, N.Y., and raised in Vermont.
He holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from Dartmouth College and an MBA in Finance from the
Columbia Graduate School of Business. He is a decorated veteran, having served as a first
lieutenant in the US Army in Vietnam. Newcomb serves as a board member of several corporations
including Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Corporation USA (HSBC) and Primark Corporation of Waltham, Mass.
He also is a member of the board of trustees of the National Book Foundation, Dartmouth College,
and the New School. Newcomb resides in Brooklyn Heights with his wife, Deborah, and two sons.
