NETLIBRARY ANNOUNCES NEW EBOOK PROFILING SERVICE
TitleDirect™ Speeds eBook Selection and Review Process
DUBLIN, Ohio, Jan 19, 2002—NetLibrary™, the leading provider of eBooks to the
institutional library market, today announced the availability of TitleDirect,
a new collection development tool that helps libraries more efficiently and effectively
manage the eBook selection and review process.
With NetLibrary's eBook catalog surpassing 40,000 copyrighted titles, and more
libraries adding significantly to their eBook collections, the need to integrate
eBook purchase decisions into existing library review, selection, and ordering processes
has grown. Designed especially for libraries with expanding eBook collections of 3,000 or
more titles, TitleDirect provides for automatic notification of new titles matching
library-specified content profiles. Notification can occur monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly,
based on library requirements.
In addition, TitleDirect facilitates and ensures that everyone involved in implementing
a library's collection development strategy has an opportunity to review lists of new
eBook titles, share their recommendations, and efficiently contribute to the ordering
process. The system associates specific users with specific responsibilities and provides
a mechanism for feedback and participation at all levels of decision-making within the library.
"As libraries have started to expand their eBook collections, customers have asked us to
proactively notify them of new additions to our catalog, and to help ensure that they are
aware of new eBooks matching their collection development efforts," said Rich Rosy, Executive
Vice President of Sales and Publishing. "TitleDirect was developed with customer input and
will prove to be an excellent tool for supporting libraries with complex acquisition processes
involving multiple decision makers in the review and purchase process," Rosy added.
eBooks are full-text electronic versions of published books that library patrons can search,
borrow, read, and return via the Internet. With NetLibrary eBooks, users can access library
resources any where, any time, and perform full-text searches across hundreds of books or
within a specific book to speed research and reference projects. These books can be viewed
online from a library, office, home, or remote location using an Internet browser. Added
benefits include an embedded dictionary in each book with accompanying visuals and verbal
pronunciation, as well as hyperlinks from the table of contents and index. eBooks are
available for varying checkout periods and are automatically checked back into the library
collection when the checkout period expires.
Future plans for NetLibrary include becoming part of the OCLC Cooperative. On Jan. 11,
2002, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved the final sale of NetLibrary assets to OCLC Online
Computer Library Center, subject to a 10-day appeal period. The sale includes both the eBook
Division and the MetaText eTextbook Divisions of NetLibrary.
