Library Journal Bestseller Identity Theft Selected as NetLibrary's August eBook of the Month

Boulder, COLO.—NetLibrary, in partnership with Silver Lake Publishing, has selected Identity Theft: How to Protect Your Name, Your Credit and Your Vital Information…and What to Do When Someone Hijacks Any of These as the August eBook of the Month. Named a Library Journal Small Press bestseller, Identity Theft offers a crash course in the mechanics of ID theft and gives readers practical tools and tips for avoiding problems.

With recent high-profile security breaches at ChoicePoint, Lexis/Nexis, Bank of America, DSW Shoe Warehouse, and Time Warner, identity theft and personal security has become a front page issue. Each year 7 to 10 million Americans are victims of identity theft, costing consumers, banks and credit card companies billions. Projections from the Federal Trade Commission and law enforcement agencies suggest that the number of reported identity theft cases in the United States may double each year through the 2000s.

"We're looking beyond just a jump in one kind of crime," said James Walsh, Silver Lake Publishing editorial director. "ID theft is a hot topic because the information economy is shifting basic notions of security and risk. The insiders know what this means; but laypeople are just beginning to understand."

Combining interviews with law enforcement and security experts with case studies and real world examples, the editors of Identity Theft explain how to make sure your credit history, financial data, account information and other essentials remain safe. In plain English, it outlines the mechanics of identity theft— from credit card and mailbox theft to social security fraud—and provides practical proven steps anyone can take to foil hijackers. Identity Theft also takes a hard look at credit bureaus that capitalize on the fears of consumers. Many of the highest-profile cases of ID theft in the 1990s and 2000s have involved information taken from credit bureau files.

Identity Theft will be provided with free, unlimited access to participating libraries August 1-31. To help libraries promote the August eBook of the Month, NetLibrary has developed a tool kit of free promotional materials that includes print-on-demand bookmarks, a sample press release, and electronic support materials.
