Press Release

"A Black and White Case" Selected as December eBook of the Month
Powerful account of landmark University of Michigan court case to be available online through more than 12,000 libraries

BOULDER, COLO.— NetLibrary, in partnership with Bloomberg Press, has selected "A Black and White Case: How Affirmative Action Survived Its Greatest Legal Challenge" as the December eBook of the Month. Praised by United Press International, the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and The Los Angeles Times, "A Black and White Case" will be provided with free, unlimited access December 1-31 to more than 12,000 member libraries and their patrons.

A masterful tale of the people and politics behind the surprising decisions that upheld race-based admissions in colleges, "A Black and White Case" documents one of the most important affirmative action cases to reach the Supreme Court in a generation. In clear, concise prose, Bloomberg News Supreme Court reporter Greg Stohr takes us deep inside America's court system. He follows the trail from Michigan to Washington D.C., revealing how lawyers argued and strategized, how lower-court judges fought behind the scenes for control of the cases, and why the White House filed a brief in support of the white students, in opposition to a chorus of retired generals and admirals worried that the military academies would no longer reflect the face of America.

Finally, Stohr details the fallout from the Supreme Court's controversial 2003 ruling that both upheld affirmative action and upended some of the methods that had been used to affect it. And he shows how colleges and universities are reshaping their affirmative action policies—an evolution closely watched by lower courts, employers, civil rights lawyers, legislators, regulators, and the public.

To help libraries promote featured eBook of the Month titles to their patrons, NetLibrary has developed a tool kit of free promotional materials that includes print-on-demand bookmarks, sample press releases, and electronic support materials.
