The Benefits of eBooks
What are 10 good reasons my library should purchase netLibrary eBooks?
The accessibility of eBooks makes them an ideal resource for supporting
different segments of your community, such as college students, faculty,
and staff, community college and elementary and secondary students, homeschooled
children, e-Learners, the local business community, and busy parents and families.
1. With a collection of eBooks, you can add thousands of titles to your collection,
with all the same rights of ownership as print books, without having to build any
additional shelves or storage facilities, without investing in additional hardware or software, or staff time.
2. A collection of eBooks enables you to provide your library users twenty-four hours a day,
seven days a week access to reliable content from respected publishers.
3. With automatic check-in, there is no re-shelving, no lost, stolen, damaged, or
overdue books. Your library may determine the checkout period for each title,
allowing you, for example, to shorten the checkout period in order to circulate
a book to more users during periods of high demand.
4. All netLibrary customers have access to the Library Resource Center. The report
functions of the Library Resource Center provide librarians with an unprecedented
view of collections usage. Reports such as Popular eBooks and Turn-Away
Statistics add a new dimension to decision making for collection development
and management in libraries.
5. The search technology in netLibrary eBooks allows your library users to search
for words or phrases within one book or across all the eBooks you have purchased
to locate quickly the information needed, making research and reference easier.
6. Houghton-Mifflin's The American Heritage™ Dictionary of the English Language,
Fourth Edition is embedded in every netLibrary eBook. While using an eBook, you
can look up a word by selecting the dictionary tab on the tool palette and
keying in the word, or by highlighting and double clicking a word. The dictionary
also provides audio pronunciations of each word. Three additional dictionaries
are available: The American Heritage™ Children's Dictionary, The American
Heritage™ De-vulgarized Dictionary and The American Heritage™ Student's Dictionary.
7. Full level eBook MARC records in MARC21 format allow eBooks to be fully integrated
into your existing catalog. Those using your online catalog will be able to access
eBooks directly from your OPAC using any PC with an Internet connection.
8. eBooks are a perfect solution to the problem of providing distance learners with
access to a full library of books. eBooks can be accessed anytime, anywhere with
the same circulation model that traditional libraries offer: one user accessing
books for a designated checkout time.
10. By adding a collection of eBooks to your library, you will be providing your
library users with a digital library as easy to use as a traditional library,
only faster, more efficient, and globally accessible.

Understanding netLibrary and eBooks
What is netLibrary?
netLibrary is the leading provider of electronic books (eBooks) and
Internet-based content management services. Hundreds of publishers of academic,
professional, reference, and scholarly books have adopted netLibrary's digital
rights management infrastructure. netLibrary develops, archives, hosts, and

What is an eBook?
The term eBook applies to published materials, such as reference books, scholarly
monographs, and trade books that have been converted into digital format for
electronic distribution. eBooks are much more powerful than traditional books.
netLibrary eBooks are available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week - from
any location in the world, with additional features such as an embedded dictionary,
a linked Table of Contents, and easy keyword searchability.

How is netLibrary different?
netLibrary is the leading provider of electronic books with the most integrated and
complete approach to eBook delivery. While some contend the convenience of electronic
content will diminish the value of libraries, we see otherwise. Ours is the only
comprehensive approach that fits the missions and methods of librarians and publishers.
From partnerships with established suppliers to OPAC integration capability, we
strive to continue to make the addition of eBooks easily compatible with the ways
libraries and librarians already work. In addition, netLibrary's eBooks include
copyright protection features, thereby preserving the traditional needs of publishers
in a changing world.

How does the netLibrary system work?
A library purchases a collection of titles just as they would print titles. netLibrary
handles all of the technology and hosts the eBooks from our servers. The library determines
the authentication strategy – patrons can find your eBooks through eBook MARC
records in the OPAC, or from the library website. As with print books, only one
patron at a time may access each copy of an eBook. The library sets the checkout time for each
eBook through our secure Library Resource Center. The Library Resource Center
also allows you to see usage and collection development reports.

How are eBooks produced?
netLibrary receives new titles from a publisher in electronic or print format. The
electronic file or print book is then converted. Non-text pictures, diagrams, and illustrations are
then integrated into the converted document. Enhancements to the eBook include live
links from the Table of Contents and Index and an embedded version of The American
Heritage™ Dictionary of the English Language.
All finished eBooks are meticulously compared with the original to ensure accuracy.
Each eBook emulates its print counterpart, maintaining the books copyright and making
viewing familiar and easy.

How does netLibrary protect copyright?
netLibrary's digital rights management system protects copyrights and limits
the copying and printing of an eBook while permitting fair use. The system
will automatically advise the user when they have exceeded the limitation.

Can I print a hard copy version of an eBook or pages from an eBook?
Users can copy or print single pages, just as people can photocopy single
pages of a print book. netLibrary, however, has developed mechanisms for
limiting the copying and printing of eBooks from the Internet. If a user
is rapidly viewing multiple pages of an eBook - a pattern that indicates the
possibility of page-by-page printing - netLibrary will display a copyright
notice and instruct the user to discontinue his or her actions. If the pattern
continues, the account becomes disabled for a period of time, and the event is
logged for tracking purposes.

Are netLibrary eBooks compatible with eBook readers/handheld devices?

eBooks are not compatible with other eBook readers or handheld devices at this time.

A Note on Privacy
netLibrary supports the American Library Association's Code of Ethics. We
believe that ensuring the privacy of library users is both an ethical
obligation and critical to the ongoing success of the Internet.

Collection Development and eBook Marketing
How can I track usage of my eBook collection?
In order to provide our library customers with flexibility and control, we built a
secure web site called the Library Resource Center with tools that facilitate library
management. These tools include usage statistic reports, the ability to set checkout
times, and Turn-Away statistics - the number of times patrons tried to check out a
title but were turned away because the book was already checked out. These reports
provide valuable data to help you manage and develop your collection.

What titles are available?
We currently have more than 40,000 eBooks available across numerous
academic disciplines and general subject categories. To search our entire
catalog and view collections prepared by our collection librarians, visit
TitleSelect™, netLibrary's new collection
development and ordering tool. When you purchase an eBook collection, your
library users also have access to nearly 4000 publicly accessible literature
and history classics. Click here to see our current
publisher list.

How does netLibrary work with publishers?
netLibrary works with both publishers and libraries to determine what content
to convert into the eBook format. Based on a one book one user model, our
platform provides broad flexibility for the distribution and use of an eBook.
Our proprietary technology platform is designed to accommodate many different
content management and distribution objectives; this includes the requirements of publishers.

Can eBooks be included in library holding statistics provided to
accrediting bodies during the accreditation process?
To date, librarians have told us that they have included eBooks
in their library statistics for accreditation. The Association
of Research Libraries has determined guidelines for counting eBooks
that fit the netLibrary model, i.e. electronic manifestations of
physical entities/units. For more information, please see ARL's
Statistical Q&A.
